Beyond Smart Buildings: Why BMS Needs to Move Past Division 23 — For Every Building
Construction Specifications Institute Master Format Division 25 is often associated with “smart buildings,” a concept that remains aspirational for many engineers. While the term “smart” evokes futuristic capabilities, its practical implementation is still evolving. Let’s reframe Division 25 not as a lofty ideal, but as a practical and alternate approach to specifying facility systems such as a building management systems (BMS).

This perspective allows engineers to leverage its structure and benefits even in traditional BMS projects. At the same time, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a permanent part of how we work, much like computers did decades ago, especially in data analysis and decision-making by normalizing data.

While we can’t predict the future, we know that AI excels at processing large volumes of data, which is central to modern building operations. By using Division 25 as a framework and leveraging an Independent Data Layer, engineers can create future-ready systems that are adaptable, data-friendly and prepared for emerging technologies like AI.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Correctly understand the trends of current specifications.
  2. Understand Division 25 and its association with Smart Buildings.
  3. Be able to highlight the benefits of Division 25 for traditional projects.
  4. Correctly use Division 25 and Independent Data Layer for future-ready design.
  5. Understand the Division 25 use case examples and specification tools.

Optimized Plumbing Design for the 21st Century: Smarter Systems for Health, Affordability, and Sustainability
Earn: 0.1 IAPMO CEU; 0.1 ASPE CEU; 0.1 ICC CEU; 1 PDH; 1 AIA LU/HSW

IAPMO ASPE ICC PDH AIA

Outdated pipe-sizing methods continue to drive the overdesign of plumbing systems in multifamily residential buildings. Wasting resources, increasing costs, and compromising water quality. This webinar explores how plumbing engineers and system designers can implement performance-based, efficiently scaled plumbing strategies tailored to today’s multifamily housing.

Using the IAPMO Water Demand Calculator® to estimate peak water demand in residential buildings, participants will learn how to align system sizing with actual usage patterns, thereby accurately estimating peak water demand in residential buildings.

The session highlights how modernized plumbing design can accelerate hot water delivery, reduce stagnation, and mitigate health risks, while supporting affordability, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Case studies will demonstrate how applying these principles can reduce infrastructure and operational costs, contributing to healthier and more resilient residential environments.

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
  1. Explain how conventional pipe-sizing practices in multifamily residential buildings contribute to excess material use, operational inefficiencies, and water quality concerns.
  2. Describe the correct calculations to use based on current fixture flow rates and usage data.
  3. Analyze how modern plumbing right-sizing reduces water age and stagnation, helping to mitigate the risk of waterborne pathogens and improve occupant health.
  4. Apply scalable, performance-driven design strategies to enhance energy efficiency, accelerate hot water delivery, and reduce the overall cost and environmental impact of multifamily plumbing systems via right-sizing.

How Maintenance Plays into the HVAC Decarbonization Trend
As buildings strive to meet ever-tightening emissions standards, decarbonization is no longer just a design or construction challenge—ongoing maintenance is now a critical piece of the puzzle. Even the most advanced, energy-efficient HVAC systems can underperform and fall short of emissions targets if regular service is neglected. From variable airflow valves (VAVs) to smart controls, the key to lasting carbon reductions lies in maintenance practices that optimize system performance and longevity.

Join ES NEWS editor Austin Keating and a panel of leading HVAC service experts for an actionable discussion on how building owners, facility managers, and contractors can leverage maintenance to cut energy use and emissions.

This webinar will explore:
  • How poor maintenance undermines even the best decarbonization investments
  • Maintenance strategies for advanced HVAC systems, including VAVs and demand-controlled ventilation
  • The business case for preventive and predictive maintenance: energy, emissions, and bottom line
  • Tools and technologies for tracking HVAC performance and maintenance needs
  • Real-world examples: From commercial office to data center, how maintenance has driven measurable carbon reductions
  • Contractor best practices for communicating value to building owners
Whether you’re retrofitting, building new, or operating existing facilities, consistent and high-quality maintenance is vital to meeting today’s carbon goals. Get practical guidance you can use to maximize your building’s efficiency and sustainability.

Let’s Talk: Condensing Equipment, (Acidic) Condensate, and the Code
During this webinar, we will define what acidic condensate is, illustrate how it’s formed in today’s high-efficiency, gas-fired heating appliances, and hit on the damage it can cause if not treated. We’ll review an effective solution to treat and safely discharge acidic condensate: a condensate neutralizer.

Our discussion will underline the importance of installing these purpose-built filtration devices to ensure compliance with local, national and industry codes. Attendees will learn how to properly size, install and maintain condensate neutralizers to prevent damage to facilities and the environment and avoid operational shutdown.

4 Key Takeaways:
  • How acidic condensate is formed in high-efficiency, gas-fired appliances (i.e. 90+% boilers, furnaces and hot water heaters) and the types of damage it can cause if not properly treated
  • What a condensate neutralizer solution is and how to properly size, install and maintain these filtration devices
  • Identify the local, national and industry codes that heating and plumbing industry pros need to be aware of; and how condensate neutralizers are a key to achieving code compliance on every high-efficiency installation
  • The opportunity for the heating and plumbing industry professional: offer customers the complete solution; drive education and adoption; provide thought leadership; capture high-margin add-on accessory sales growth and recurring service revenue

An HVAC Contractor's Roadmap for A2L Safety, Refrigerant Management, and Compliance
Under the AIM Act, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is phasing down the production and consumption of high-GWP refrigerants. As part of this phase down, manufacturers had to stop producing equipment containing high-GWP refrigerants like R-410A by January 1, 2025, which is driving the HVAC industry's transition to lower-GWP alternatives, including A2Ls. This webinar will cover the AIM Act, safety considerations for the new mildly flammable refrigerants, and the importance of recovery and reclaim efforts.
