Antitrust and Deregulation in Software, Telecommunications, and Electricity: Current Directions |
Timothy Brennan
Monday, October 13, 2008
8:00 - 9:30 AM |
The "Electronics Evolution" is driven in large measure by evolution in software, telecommunications, and electricity. While technology dominates, all of those industries have been the targets of major policy interventions in recent years¦suing Microsoft under the antitrust laws, implementing the 1996 Telecommunications Act, and opening electricity markets to competition. We will review the rationales for those actions, indicate how policy may drive those sectors, and how those drivers may affect the commercial evolution of the electronics industry.

The objective of this session is to introduce educators, students and practicing technologist to the evolution in radio technology pushed by the demand for ubiquitous communication of any media at any place. Cognitive Radios or Soft Radios and the Digital Signal Processor have changed radios as significantly as the heterodyning principle introduced by Edwin Armstrong changed radio circuits for decades. Processing power and speed are making MIMO and other spectrally efficient and robust signals more common technologies in standards like WiMAX and 4G wireless networks. The audience will be presented a vision of the radio frontier and what intelligent processing in the radio chain means to wireless communications. |
The Awesome Cube |
Jeff LeSueur
Monday, October 13, 2008
10:45 - 11:30 AM |
Students always learn more when they enjoy and want to do the work. The Awesome Cube™ is a PIC based project kit that has students excited and energized about electronics and programming. The cube is designed with 45 super bright LEDs on five sides, and a control board equipped with ICSP (in circuit serial programming). After building their cube, students learn PIC BASIC with a video tutorial. They start out with zero programming experience and gain understanding of real programming language in just days. Students invent dozens of subroutines to control the LEDs and then combine them with random, case select or lookup tables to create a unique personal final program and load it onto their cube. The Awesome Cube™ is a hit at open houses and classroom visits. Projects like this are needed to spark interest and bring more students to technology. Instructors are welcome to have the project outline, instructional videos, programming tutorial videos and all programming exercises and answers.

You Will Be Green! The Future of Technology in a World that is Running Out of Everything |
Jay Warmke
Monday, October 13, 2008
2:00 - 2:45 PM |
How will you compete in a world where resources cost more than people are willing to pay? Metal, food, gasoline, grains… prices doubling and even tripling over the past year or two. Our electrical, transportation, water, sewer infrastructures are hanging by a thread – and nobody seems willing or able to address their needs.
Is this a momentary economic hiccup – or the beginning of a new reality? Scared? Nervous? More than just a little confused?
Then again, perhaps we are simply coming to the end of an era that won’t be missed? The age of cheap food (both in price and quality), of nearly free gasoline, of planned obsolescence. A post- WWII economic party that left our lives crowded with junk and our hearts feeling unsatisfied. Maybe this new reality is just what the doctor ordered.
What are the implications of doing business in a society where transportation is no longer cheap and easy? Perhaps your carbon footprint is just a first warning step. What if your products and services must be “resource neutral?” Must we now design, not only for the life of our product – but for its next life?
You will be green! Count on it. You have no choice.

Performance Assessment - Making Sure Your Technicians "Can Do" |
David Carroll
Kevin Gulliver
Monday, October 13, 2008
3:00 - 4:30 PM |
This presentation describes how the learning styles of today's "Information Age" technical student, contrasts traditional training delivery processes against integrated learning environment processes, and demonstrates performance testing software used by industry to ensure their technicians "can do".
Nida Corporation has developed a performance assessment process that quickly identifies what a technician can "do" as well as what a technician knows. This performance assessment process has been implemented and tested by the military and key high-tech industry leaders to evaluate technicians at all levels. The results of the performance tests lead to interventions that improve the skills and technical competency of the technician. This presentation identifies the unique learning style of today's technical student and describes the process for developing a fully integrated technical training performance assessment program. A full performance assessment demonstration will be provided using a tried and proven computer-based performance testing program. The presentation will ensure that we know what our technical students "can do". |

9 – 11:30 AM |
Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs) are a big part of electronic design today and thus should be included in every electronics training program. In this session the presenter will discuss how easy it is to bring CPLD programming into the classroom using relatively inexpensive programming hardware and Quartus II software. The session will cover step by step circuit development in the Quartus II software and demonstrate how easy it is to download the circuit design into a CPLD. Using this technology the presenter will discuss how CPLD programming helps the student better understand digital logic gates and combinational logic circuits such as decoders, multiplexers, demultiplexers, flip-flops, counters and registers. This session is a must for any educator not already familiar and using CPLD programming in the classroom.

Tuesday, October 13, 2008
1:30 - 2:15 PM |
The economic needs of the United States and most of the world are highly dependent on the supply of trained personnel to install, operate, and maintain the emerging technologies and train the community of advanced technology users. At an increasing rate, special interest groups are introducing technologies and developing standards for an ever-growing supply of user communication and network peripherals. Technologies are evolving so quickly that previously defined technologies are being bypassed and moving to the next generation of devices. These proceedings are threatening the nation's ability to educate, train, and certify personnel in these technologies in a timely way. The focus of this presentation is the education, training, and certification of Aerospace and Avionic Fiber Optic Specialists and the method by which the Electronics Technicians Association (ETA), SAE International, ARINC, and other related associations are attempting to coordinate these activities. |
