Environmental Data Management – From Micro to Macro for Environmental Sustainable Development

Due to rising global awareness of environmental impacts due to anthropogenic activities, organizations from local industrial sectors and government agencies to national policy makers and international treaty signees are required to make related business decisions and formulate policies, regulations, and frameworks. Pollutants emitted from industrial sites such as coal-fired power plants, petroleum refineries, and pulp and paper mills have local, regional, and global environmental effects. Environmental data collected, recorded, and reported at a site can be applied by the owner/operator, governmental agencies, and researchers for actions and recommendations that can contribute to global environmental sustainable development. Accurate, traceable, and auditable data are essential to provide the very basis for these needs. Environmental data management needs, ranging from a micro-scale, source-by-source data to macro-scale global data management, are supported by various technology solutions. This presentation presents a process from a facility’s source-by-source data management system to generate environmental indicators including impact assessments as a full scale application of environmental data management.
