Joseph A. Quinnan, PE, PG
Principal Hydrogeologist/Engineer
ARCADIS, Inc

Mr. Quinnan has more than 18 years professional experience in environmental consulting focusing on site characterization and in situ remediation methods.   He is co-author of the book Remediation Hydraulics and is a discipline leader in remediation hydrogeology and subsurface evaluation and characterization at ARCADIS.  He is actively engaged in the development of new tracer testing methods, DNAPL characterization and mobility assessments, and hydrostratigraphy methods.

Prior to joining ARCADIS, he was involved in in-situ technology development and demonstrations for the Department of Defense and several CERCLA sites.  He has been involved innovative in situ technology applications since the 1990’s, having successfully applied diverse techniques including nano-scale iron to treat chlorinated solvents, propane biostimulation to treat MTBE, and in-situ remediation of perchlorate via biostimulation at over 100 sites in the United States, Europe, and South America.

Presentation Description
Aquifer Depositional History - Field Evaluation Strategies and Impact on Flow and Contaminant Transport

Successful application of in-situ remediation techniques depends on reliable distribution of reagents in the subsurface to provide adequate contact with contaminants. While much emphasis has been placed on chemistry and microbiology, evidence is mounting that a controlling factor is mapping the aquifer architecture and so that the pathways for advective and diffusive transport can be evaluated. Recent advances in stratigraphy, permeability, and plume characterization methods combined with a renewed emphasis on depositional environments provides the key to finer-scale resolution that is necessary to determine where transport occurs and where mass is stored in aquifers. This hydrostratigraphy approach facilitates classification of the mass-flux in the aquifer system and provides practitioners a window to evaluate factors that determine the best approach to in-situ remediation.
