Presentation Description
Combining Engineering and Biology in a low-impact In-Situ Treatment
Sediments: applications to sites contaminated with PAHs, PCBs, and mercury
This paper describes a low-impact delivery system (referred to as SediMite) for introducing treatment agents such as activated carbon to sediment. Eight studies are currently underway to evaluate the efficacy of SediMite for a broad range of hydrophobic chemicals and the approach has been considered for application to MGP sites. SediMite is a granular material delivered from the water surface, sinks to the sediments, and becomes incorporated into the sediments in a manner that targets the biologically mixed layer. The treatment agent is therefore delivered to the zone that is most important. And, the delivery system does not require extensive mechanical mixing or injection of materials into the sediment. Laboratory results from bench-scale treatment will be presented. In addition, we will describe the current pilot projects and the applicability of the remedial technology for MGP sites. The pilot projects include tidal and non-tidal systems and fresh and marine environments.
